چکیده

The study of very ancient microfossils has recently raised contentious issues regarding interpretation of the biogenicity of the structures. In situ investigation of certain elements such as sulfur within potential microfossils is a powerful complement to other methods of investigation that can provide valuable information on biogenicity. We present here a first such study on Precambrian microfossils from the 700–800-My-old Neoproterozoic Draken Formation, Svalbard, using scanning X-ray microscopy (SXM) in the fluorescence mode and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the sulfur K-edge. SXM allowed mapping of up to 300 ppm of probably endogenous sulfur within the kerogenous walls of Myxococcoides chlorelloidea microfossils. XANES showed that the sulfur is most likely contained in heterocyclic organic compounds, such as thiophene(s). 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In Situ Search for Traces of Life in Extraterrestrial Samples Using X-ray Spectromicroscopy at the Sulfur K-edge

Introduction: Extraterrestrial sample return missions have been undertaken (Stardust and Genesis) and are being planned for Mars (Mars Sample Return, 2025). One of the major objectives of the latter is the search for traces of life. It will be important to start searching for traces of life during the preliminary examination stages while returned samples are still stored in their original conta...

High-resolution imaging of sulfur oxidation states, trace elements, and organic molecules distribution in individual microfossils and contemporary microbial filaments

Owing to the delicate nature of fossil microorganisms and inherent difficulties for discriminating true fossils from artifacts, an important challenge is to extract unequivocal biogenic information from individual microfossils using high-resolution, nondestructive and sensitive techniques. Here, we use combined synchrotron (X-ray microfluorescence, X-ray absorption near-edge structure and infra...

Synthesis and characterization of Gd2O2 S: Tb3+ phosphor powder for X-ray imaging detectors

Gadolinium oxysulfide phosphor doped with trivalent terbium have been synthesized using urea homogenous precipitation and followed by sulfurization at 800 °C under argon atmosphere. Structural and morphological of synthesized phosphor powder were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR). Hexagonal structure ...

Automated chemical analysis of internally mixed aerosol particles using X-ray spectromicroscopy at the carbon K-edge.

We have developed an automated data analysis method for atmospheric particles using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy coupled with near edge X-ray fine structure spectroscopy (STXM/NEXAFS). This method is applied to complex internally mixed submicrometer particles containing organic and inorganic material. Several algorithms were developed to exploit NEXAFS spectral features in the energy ...

In Situ Soft X-ray Spectromicroscopy of Early Tricalcium Silicate Hydration

The understanding and control of early hydration of tricalcium silicate (C₃S) is of great importance to cement science and concrete technology. However, traditional characterization methods are incapable of providing morphological and spectroscopic information about in situ hydration at the nanoscale. Using soft X-ray spectromicroscopy, we report the changes in morphology and molecular structur...
